Junior Achievement Elementary Grade Programs
 
Our Cityฎ

Our City (Grade 3) is designed to provide practical information about businesses and the main occupations found in those businesses in a typical city. This program is delivered as a series of five 35-minute activities recommended for students in grade three. The self-contained program kit includes detailed activity plans for the volunteer and materials for 30 students.

SESSIONS KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES
One:Inside Cities
  • The students recognize that a city is a place where people live, work, and play. They become aware of the importance of city planning to the economic development of a city.
  • Define a city as a place where people live, work, and play
  • Discuss the importance of city planning in guiding economic development
  • Identify jobs within a city
Two:Building a City
  • The students examine the role of a carpenter and discover jobs within the construction business.
  • Understand the importance of the construction business to a city’s economy
  • Recognize the skills a carpenter needs
  • Identify jobs within the construction business
Three:Dining Out
  • The students examine the role of a restaurant owner and identify the people needed to successfully operate a restaurant. They also learn to differentiate between a consumer and a producer.
  • Understand the decisions that have to be made in order to start a restaurant
  • Identify jobs within the restaurant business
  • Recognize the connection between producers and consumers
Four:Making Headlines
  • The students examine the role of a newspaper reporter and the purpose of a newspaper in a city. They realize that there are many jobs in the newspaper business.
  • Understand the importance of the newspaper as a communication tool
  • Recognize the skills a reporter needs
  • Identify jobs within the newspaper business
Five:You Can Bank on It
  • The students become aware of jobs within a bank and examine their importance in a city.
  • Learn that one purpose of a bank is to store money
  • Complete a simple bank transaction
  • Identify jobs within the banking industry
